USW ratifies new tire contract

The United Steelworkers have a new three-year contract with Bridgestone Firestone covering 5,200 members, including 160 in Akron.

The pact, among other things, will have union workers who retired from 1991 onward pay health insurance premiums for the first time, the head of Akron-based Local 7 said. Union members who retired prior to 1991 will not see changes in health-care coverage, Local 7 President Mike O'Connor said.

The Pittsburgh-based union announced the contract ratification Thursday.

About 52 percent of the membership voted to accept the tentative agreement reached April 4, the union said.

Akron-based Local 7 approved the contract by a higher percentage, O'Connor said.

``It's not something we're particularly tickled with.
