| Boarding houses likened to 'mental health slums'
Hundreds of boarding homes across Dallas warehouse the elderly, the disabled and the mentally ill in privatized bedlam. They are what the head of the region's mental health system flatly calls "mental health slums." City officials believe at least 350 unlicensed, unregulated board and care homes house 2,500 people across Dallas – probably more. "Pretty much, you can open up a boarding home anywhere you want to, stuff as many people in there as you can, keep them at 85 degrees or worse in the summer and 50 degrees in the winter. You can nearly feed them dog food and get away with it," said one veteran caseworker in North Texas' privatized mental health system. "So many of the residents are clearly psychotic. We have clients who think they're God," the worker said.

Open Letter To Uri Avnery, Noam Chomsky And Jimmy Carter
This essay is prompted by a piece, Bed of Sodom, by Uri Avnery (1), posted on the Gush Shalom website on April 21st. It is amusing and instructive that the article's name provides its organizing metaphor, taken from the Old Testament, but without acknowledging that the story is a Jewish version of the older Greek myth that tells the tale of one Procrustes, who insisted that one size fit all. The piece is a spirited defense of the two-state solution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, with Avnery contesting that the now popular comparison of Israel with the former South Africa is a force fit. No wonder Martin Luther said that "reason is a whore." For those who don't know, Gush Shalom is the Israeli Peace Bloc, the oldest and largest, and one might say, most prestigious "progressive" group on the Israeli Left.
