Board of health transfers plaintiff nurse again

The Erie County Board of Health shocked former school nurse Maria Sulewski when they informed her by letter April 20 that her job title had changed once again.

This was the second time since November Sulewski said she was forced to change nursing positions. She sued after the first time, claiming the board changed her job because she wouldn't teach a sexual education class due to her religious beliefs.

Sulewski, 55, is a Roman Catholic Christian who does not believe in using any form of birth control or contraception. She claimed in her lawsuit against the Erie County Board of Health and other health department officials that she was forced to take a less desirable schedule as a school nurse in November because she refused to do a presentation on birth control and contraception for two area elementary and junior high schools.

DHEC Names New Ocean Resource Official

(Columbia) - Marvin Pontiff has been appointed assistant deputy commissioner for the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management, the agency announced Monday.

"Marvin has worked with industry, as well as local, state and federal governments to facilitate compliance with marine environmental laws and regulations," said Carolyn Boltin, deputy commissioner of DHEC's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. "He will be a tremendous asset to the agency as we work to protect the resources of the state's eight coastal counties."

Boltin said Pontiff comes to DHEC from UNITECH, Inc. where he managed the program that conducted security drills at ports around the country. Pontiff also served as director of safety and security for the Mediterranean Shipping Company.

Hogs at three Utah farms will be tested for pet food contamination

There is a real concern that the pet food contamination that affected thousands of animals could now be a threat to the human food supply. Scraps from the possibly contaminated pet food were used to make pig feed; that feed was distributed to six states: California, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio and Utah. Three Northern Utah farms, with a combined total of 1,000 to 2,000 pigs, bought the feed in question. But there are still a lot of unknowns, such as: Is the feed actually contaminated? Are the hogs contaminated? Have any of those animals been sold for consumption? There are few answers, but the state is taking precautions anyway. "We do not think there is any public health problem that exists in the state of Utah for our consumers or for the consumption of any pork in the State of Utah," says State of Utah Department of Agriculture Commissioner Leonard Blackham.
