Health Savings Accounts Offer Tax Benefits To Those Who Qualify

Health care consumers may realize significant financial benefits from health savings accounts. Created under the 2003 Medicare Act, an HSA is a tax-favored savings plan offered by many banks, insurance companies, brokerages and other financial institutions and that can be used to pay for qualified medical expenses. According to the Alabama Society of CPAs, health savings accounts offer significant tax benefits to individuals who qualify. Eligibility To establish an HSA, you must have coverage under a high-deductible health plan. For 2007, these are defined as having a $1,100 deductible for individuals and $2,200 or higher for families, up from $1,050 and $2,100 respectively for 2006. HSAs are designed, in part, to help those with high-deductible policies to pay for health expenses until insurance benefits kick in.

Combo Therapies Work Best for Early Breast Cancer

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Teaming up cancer therapies appears to be the ticket to survival for women with early stage breast cancer. New research shows women who receive both chemotherapy and Tamoxifen end up living longer than those who receive tamoxifen alone.

The same could not be said, however, for combo therapy with tamoxifen and ovarian suppression treatment, which stops the ovaries from functioning, except in a small subset of younger women with estrogen-positive cancers. More research in this subset of women is needed, note the researchers, to determine whether this combo treatment might be best for this group of women.

The British results are based on two studies; the first compared nearly 2,200 women who were assigned to receive either ovarian suppression along with tamoxifen or tamoxifen alone.

Research shows math anxiety ends in poor test performance

Many students might say anxiety about a class inhibits their ability to perform well. In the case of mathematics, they would be correct.

A growing field of psychological research says math anxiety can cause students of all levels to perform poorly in math, said University of Chicago researcher Sian Beilock.

Math anxiety is a specialized type of anxiety and is not unusual among college students. Seventy-five percent of those who suffer from some form of anxiety will do so before age 22, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

It is important to differentiate between having anxiety and a learning disorder, said University clinical psychology doctoral candidate Megan Benoit Ratcliff.

"If your IQ says you are able to perform well but your performance does not line up, then you may have a learning disorder," Ratcliff said.
