Don’t Drink Your Calories!

It may well be that soda pop is mankinds worst ever discovery. If you drink soda pop, especially the caffeinated kind, it could kill you, as shown recently when a mans death seems to have been associated with his overconsumption of diet soda. But most especially, it can go right after your kids health. Pop gives the average teenager approximately 12.5 teaspoons of refined sugar a day. It works out to that much more than what our US government has determined people need in unrefined sugar per day. Also, your kid and you are using soda pop, in all probability, as a food. In 1977-78, teenagers drank twice as much milk as soft drinks, but by 1994-96, it had turned around; they were drinking twice as much soda as they were drinking milk. And such consumption is linked with lower intake of nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Virginia tragedy is a warning for local educators

The shooting at Virginia Tech University that shook the nation nearly two weeks ago reignited a national debate about treating students with mental illness at schools.

The shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, displayed many warning signs of severe emotional disturbance in the years leading up to the incident.

That revelation has some advocates worrying about a backlash toward people with mental illness, but it also added urgency to their calls for expanded mental health services and strategies to prevent similar tragedies.

Local mental health and school officials say that while it is unlikely such a shooting could happen here, it is naive to think a similar incident could not occur. Thus, adequate emergency response systems are crucial.

But equally important is early identification of mental illness in students in both the college and K-12 education systems, as well as quick access to good treatment.

Q & A With Fleetcare Tandersport’s Leanne Tander

Q. Phillip Island is the quickest track in the country. What's it like to drive one of the quickest cars in the sport around it?

I have been around there in a V8 Supercar, a Formula Ford and many other cars but the F3 car is the most enjoyable to drive around the track – a circuit that is one of my favourites.

It's not until you get in an F3 car until you realise how well the cars are suited to the circuit – it suits them really well.

Q. So what makes it so good?

It's everything – I think because it's a flowing circuit once you have the grip and the downforce of a Formula 3 car you can flow the car and build up a rhythm – it's like the car is on rails around there which is a fantastic feeling.
