The annual Wellness Fair has expanded its focus this year to become the Eco Health and Wellness Fair, a collaboration between the Wellness Center and the Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP). It will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, in Quarry Plaza. Arranged like a resource fair, the event will have many informative booths with ecology and health professionals from the UCSC community as well as the Santa Cruz community, free health assesments, screenings, refreshments, prizes and more. "Ask a Yogi", "Ask a Doctor" and "Ask a Sexpert" will be additional booths providing specialized information. A Luna booth will provide information on women's health and nutrition. Chair massages will be offered by Shelly Patton and the Wholistic Health Program. Free health assessments are scheduled to include strength testing and body fat index and mental health screenings for depression, anxiety and eating disorders.
Board of health transfers plaintiff nurse again
The Erie County Board of Health shocked former school nurse Maria Sulewski when they informed her by letter April 20 that her job title had changed once again. This was the second time since November Sulewski said she was forced to change nursing positions. She sued after the first time, claiming the board changed her job because she wouldn't teach a sexual education class due to her religious beliefs. Sulewski, 55, is a Roman Catholic Christian who does not believe in using any form of birth control or contraception. She claimed in her lawsuit against the Erie County Board of Health and other health department officials that she was forced to take a less desirable schedule as a school nurse in November because she refused to do a presentation on birth control and contraception for two area elementary and junior high schools.
