Ethanol plant builder unfazed by site hazards

The $100 million ethanol distillery proposed for Conoy Township would be built atop an area laced with sinkholes, dissolving rock, vertical cracks and possibly a deep cave, experts have found.

But while opponents hope such findings will help sink the project, the chief engineer who performed the work, Lancaster Biofuels officials and the owners of the incinerator next door say it's neither surprising nor a big deal.

"I've built ethanol tanks in 10 states. I really don't see this as a poor site. I'd say it's an average site," said Joseph Waxse, the principal engineer who oversaw a detailed underground probe of the site in 2004.

Waxse and others say a base of dissolving limestone is not unusual in this part of the country, and there are engineering techniques to safely compensate for such undesirable conditions.

The new MDs in town: Hospitalists

Patients at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside are learning a thing or two about changes in the administration of care.

South Nassau is using a type of physician not well known to the public -- the hospitalist.

Patients at South Nassau receive care from teams that include these doctors, mostly internal medicine physicians who specialize in acute care and are based at the hospital rather than in private offices. Some hospitals call them inpatient care specialists. "From the moment patients are admitted to the second they're discharged, the hospitalists work in concert with the physicians and the nursing staff and provide complementary care that assists patients in their recovery from illness or injury," said Dr. Joshua Kugler, senior vice president at South Nassau.

Guidelines For Diagnosis And Treatment Of Stable COPD Issued By The ACP, Accompanying Video Included

The ACP (American College of Physicians) has released its latest clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). COPD is a lung disease which progresses slowly - lung function is progressively lost. COPD is more common among smokers.

The guidelines appear in Annals of Internal Medicine, November 6th, 2007 issue.

Over 5% of US adults have COPD. It is the fourth primary cause of death and the twelfth leading cause of illness in the USA. A COPD patient will typically have a chronic cough, wheezing - some patients may also have shortness of breath and considerable activity limitation.

Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are both types of COPDs. As patients usually have overlapping symptoms, it has become more common today for doctors to use the broader term COPD.

Gators Just Trying To Put It All Together

Land O' Lakes has cruised to two victories in as many games this season, and the Gators have noticed some bright spots as well as some areas in to improve.

"In spurts, we had some great things, and other spurts we didn't look so good," Land O" Lakes coach Laurie Pacholke said. "There's still a lot of things to work on, but overall I think our ball movement is really strong right now. We were missing a lot of open shots, but again, in spurts we looked really, really good and in others you can tell it's early in the season."

The Gators were without Brittany Knipp on Wednesday against Pasco because she had a softball commitment. Knipp signed a scholarship earlier that day to play softball at Stetson University.

"Defensively, we were missing Brittany in the backcourt, so that hurt us a little bit on defense," Pacholke said.

MOUNT VERNON — The pre-Thanksgiving rash of warm weather gave rise to the swarming of Asian lady beetles in some parts of Central Ohio this week, although their numbers are generally much lower this year than they have been in previous years.

"I’ve seen them in years past cover the whole side of a building," said Rick Amore of Helmick’s Exterminating in Mount Vernon.

He said that in large numbers, the beetles can be very stressful. One particular case he had involved trying to get rid of a nest of yellow jackets, which were surrounded by thousands of Asian beetles. He couldn’t tell at times whether he was being bitten or being stung.

Over the last 20 years, multi-colored Asian beetles (Harmonia axyridis) have become the dominant species of ladybug in North America.
