NPs can have positive impact

If there were easy solutions to Ontario's doctor shortage they'd be in place by now, but one idea before the province's health advisory council has real promise.

The idea is to give nurse practitioners additional powers that are currently the purview of physicians.

NPs are expert nurses with extra education that enables them to provide front-line primary health care. They work closely with family docs and other healthcare workers and can currently diagnose and treat everyday illnesses such as minor infections and injuries. They can also help patients to manage chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure.

If Ontario were to amend the law, it could allow nurse practitioners to treat fractures and dislocations, dispense additional drugs and administer ultrasound and other diagnostic tools.

NEWS- Pesticide poison: Area schools behind the times in pest control

There's no question that certain health ailments have soared in frequency over the past decade. The incidence of asthma, allergies, and autism are at an all-time high in children, according to numerous medical studies, and many doctors are pointing to the link between chemical pesticides and such health problems.

Nationally, some states have banned the use of pesticides in schools, and in Virginia-- at the urging of the Virginia Department of Education and the Department of Environmental Quality-- nearly two dozen school systems have adopted "integrated pest management" plans, in which pesticides are used only as a last resort.

Two school systems are noticeably missing from that list, however, and environmental advocates are bugging them to change that.

"Our kids are really sick today," says Jackie Lombardo, who's affiliated with both the advocacy nonprofit Friend and Advocates for Children, Teachers and Schools as well as the Piedmont branch of the Sierra Club.

Nearly 80% of UAW workers ratify pact with Ford 11/18/07

United Auto Workers members have ratified a historic four-year contract with Ford Motor Co. that sets lower pay for some newly hired workers and puts the company's huge retiree health care debt into a UAW-run trust.

The UAW, which represents about 54,000 workers at Ford, said Wednesday that 79 percent of those voting favored the pact.

Workers at General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC already have ratified similar deals, with the contract winning at Chrysler by only a small margin. Unlike the other two automakers, there was no strike at Ford.

The landmark deals have been praised by the companies and union for protecting jobs while at the same time cutting labor costs to make the struggling automakers more competitive with their Japanese rivals.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said the union negotiated a contract with Ford that protects wages, benefits and seniority rights and provides income and secure health care for retirees.

The State of Arkansas Department of Human Services, Division of Medical Services has selected U.S. Care Management (formally Specialty Disease Management) to provide obstetrical and infant health management services to assist in improving birth outcomes and reducing costs associated with complicated pregnancies, pre-term births and high-risk infants among Medicaid participants in Crittenden, Phillips and St. Francis Counties, Arkansas. The pilot program, called BirthWait®, began in June 2007 and will continue for two years.

Coolermaster case is both clever and smart

THERE ARE TWO flavours of computer case we see in the labs these days. The first is by a known computer manufacturer where the design is very formulaic and made for only one, often bespoke, motherboard. Low cost is a significant factor within the mass production of these units, which is clearly evident when you open them up.

The other has more options for expandability, varied in design to suit multiple motherboards and has a greater aesthetically pleasing overall look. Coolermaster passed along one of their latest cases of the latter of late, along with the X-Craft 360 for us to browse over at The INQ.

Cooler Master COSMOS 1000

The COSMOS 1000 first caught our eye at CeBit this year, when coverage began to trickle out caused quite a stir.
