Good news, bad news

From time to time I actually try to do what's right in my dietary habits. I try to eat good foods and as many natural foods as I can. When I slip up and indulge in high fat foods loaded with preservatives (more often than I care to admit), I suffer a severe case of nutritional guilt.

However, the things I've been reading in the newspaper lately certainly have put me into a nutritional tizzy. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what foods were nutritionally good and what ones were not. Now, I just don't know.

For years the good health people have been telling us to avoid chemical preservatives, especially BHA and BHT. Why? Because it was believed these nasty chemicals could cause cancer - the Big C. Now it seem that not only do the nasty chemicals not cause cancer, they may in fact, even help to prevent it.

Medical tourism

Affordable health care has become an oxymoron in the U.S. over the past 20 years or so. While the rate of inflation has remained in check for most of the U.S. economy, it has been increasing at double-digit numbers for health-related goods and services. While some progress has been made recently, it still outpaces the general inflation figures by 200% to 300%. As a result, employers, both large and small, have struggled to maintain cost-effective health coverage. The sad reality is that America now has over 45 million uninsured people.

Although a number of strategies have been employed to keep health care costs in check, little progress has been made. Despite innovative ideas such as consumer-driven health plans and wellness efforts, most employers at best are doing little but treading water.

Health district recommends flu shots

The Westport Weston Helath District recommends flu shots for those at high risk of the flu. What is the flu? Influenza is an acute viral infection characterized by the sudden onset of fever, chills, headaches, muscle pains, severe weakness, exhaustion and cough. It is mainly spread through droplets of infectious respiratory secretions or by fine respiratory aerosols produced when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes. It may also be spread by hand/face contact after touching surfaces contaminated with infectious respiratory droplets. The incubation period is one to three days. People are contagious from the onset of symptoms through four to five days of illness. The acute symptoms last for about a week, although full recovery may take longer. Why get vaccinated? "Prevention is the best means to help stop the spread of this potentially life-threatening illness.

Canada to invest in health care for African children

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Canada is contributing $105 million over five years toward an international fund to help save children in Africa and Asia from dying of preventable diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and measles, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Monday.

The contribution is part of the “Initiative to Save a Million Lives," sponsored by UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and other donor countries. The funds were announced in conjunction with a 20-minute visit to a local elementary school, where Harper was photographed with a crammed and humid class of kindergarten-age children.
